A home for a bunnyOn Sunday, April 11 The Post-Star Newspaper had an Editorial piece that discussed
the controversy regarding the proposed new facility for The Open Door---178 Warren St. This facility, formerly known
as the Glens Falls Home for Aged Women would be an ideal location for us---plenty of room for all of our programs,
within walking and bussing distance for clientele, far enough removed from South Street where we would more easily be able
to control who is outside of our facility (ie--ability to sanction troublemakers), enough land to be able to possibly have
a vegetable garden plot, and the ability to use a work force to care for a historic property. This property
seems perfct for us, which is why it rose to the top of our wish list. Not everyone else agrees, though. There has
been some vocalization of concern regarding our relocation. This time, the issue is not in getting us off of South
Street (and thus "beautifying" the exit 18 corridor), but the fact that we would be in close proximity to a local
cultural organization. The Post-Star's editorial touched on some of these reasons, and summarized that, while some
of the concerns were valid, they were not severe enough to warrant us not getting that property. In fact, the editorial
piece highly supported our endeavors, particularly in the location of 178 Warren Street.
"You
cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot
bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking
away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and
should do for themselves." ~ Abraham Lincoln
