Hello! My name is David B., and I am a happily recovered alcoholic
and crack cocaine addict.
I arrived in Glens Falls 4 years ago on a Greyhound Bus with two suitcases and $20 in my pocket.
I had been homeless, and staying at the Salvation Army in TX. A friend that I had met there suggested that we come
back to Glens Falls (his hometown), basically to get drunk. I found myself eating at The Open Door Soup Kitchen, and
working out of the local day labor. I earned just enough money to get drunk and high.
An opportunity arose through the
day labor to land a very good job at Finch Pruyn. I realiazed that this was a blessing from God, and that He was
attempting to woo me back. Because, you, see, I had been a Christian in the past, but because of the powerful stronghold
of addiction, I had backslidden into a serious state.
One year later, I had again become homeless, and felt mentally and physically destroyed. I had finally come to the conclusion that my condition was a matter of life and death.
I entered rehab for what seemed like the 100th time. I was finally willing to go to any lengths to recover and re-establish
my relationship with the Lord, which would help me in my path of healing. While staying at the halfway house, I began
volunteering at The Open Door. I asked Chaplain Bruce Hersey about a Christian 12-step program that was facilitated
by Pastor Jeff Wood. I began attending these meeting, and told Pastor Jeff that I was looking for a church to attend.
I
have been a member of Pastor Jeff's church (Abiding Life) for over 3 years, and have remained clean and sober for over 3 years.
This is due in large part to Chaplain Bruce's and Pastor Jeff's continued support, guidance, and prayers. I am
often amazed at how God used my bad decisions to direct me to good people who cared enough to help me to heal.
